But, I can't see Sunila Abesekara. Is she not in the country? After all how can this type of a "Rising" be successful without that lady? She is one of the most prominent figures among a galaxy of Human Rights Protectors in this part of the world, let along in the entire world.
Hope she will soon be back in the business at a time "Rights of the Muslims" are violated.
Her NGO in Sri Lanka along with host of others which are headed and filled with Sunila type of Human Rights protectors will have a good time again as Muslim Countries might have already started pumping money in the name of protecting "Muslim's Rights".
So we will again soon see Sunila and her cohorts publishing press releases, issuing statements and participating in "big rallies" etc, etc, etc
A typical NGO monumental Boru show! See the crowed gathered there. They are all so called "activists", "human right defenders" and "researches" so on from NGOs who don't have an iota of clue what's going on with regard to injustices perpetrated against women even in urban areas in the country, let alone in villages.
Take note the number of guys with cameras in proportion to number of "protesters" or "activists". You need to have a good "shots" to send to your patrons living in a cool Western country who know only thing about Sri Lanka is its Tamil genocidal Sinhalese inhabitants.
We see an absolute contrast when it comes to countries like India where the activists are real activists who have been literally living and working with the village people. That's why the protests and demonstrations by them against rape incidents that recently happened drew large scale attention even in the international media.
The qualification for such an activist in Sri Lanka is that you should speak English in a non-Sri Lankan accent, be dressed preferably in Salwar in so called "Protests", smoke and take liquor in parties happening regularly with White-skinned patrons of them.
Anonymous 02 has brought out a very interesting point. There has absolutely no activists or activism as far as Sri Lanka is concerned. Perhaps Sri Lanka might be the only country in the world that a bogus activism holds sway. You find a vibrant and passionate activism in countries like India, many countries in African and South-American continent and some countries in South East Asia. They are seasoned by working with down-trodden people and know the exact issues that the people face.
The so called activists in Sri Lanka are a pathetic bunch of stooges who dance to the tune of some organizations/individuals from the West or the Western countries themselves. This is one of the strongest reasons that the so called activists here are so distanced from the masses that very mentioning of their names makes an average Sri Lankan shudder with revulsion. A true activist is loved by the down-trodden people as they take enormous risks even at the expense in their own lives on behalf of them. True, to the misbehaving and corrupt governments, individuals and organisations they have become a thorn in their flesh. As far as Sri Lanka is concerned the governments have primarily become hostile towards the so called activists as they are working hand in hand with vested interest individuals, organisations and countries in the West against the national interests supporting secessionist agendas and terrorism.
As Anonymous 02 exactly points out our so called activists have become such "activists" as they have a good command of the English language and most probably coming from English speaking Colombo middle class.
So Sri Lanka's so called "Civil Society" is just a bunch of ass lickeres of the West.It is indeed a shame. The photo by the post by Oo-oru Miyaa speaks volumes!
Well, an interesting discussion! Yet another observation which you guys seem to have not noticed!
See the general atmosphere among the crowed! Has anybody noticed any type of seriousness among them? They are supposed to have gathered there to show their protest against one of the most brutal crimes perpetrated against women folk.Some of them are in smiling mood and in casual discussions. What seems to have been placards are held very casually.Do you find any sense of passion among them to the cause they are supposed to fight for?
They seem to have just gathered there for fun or a picnic. So the picture tells a thousand words!
Atavism Vs Civil Society! Sri Lanka was inherently not destined to have a legacy of activism as we have historically been very lax on this direction. We have virtually had no struggle in attaining the independence unlike other countries. India for example has had masses based activism and struggles from pre-independence era. The legacy goes whereas we Sri Lankan's always wait until we are given something on a silver-platter
It’ interesting to see how these defenders of Human Rights and Women Rights and so many rights would react to the rising Muslim fundamentalism in Sri Lanka. There is no doubt that these big hearted humanitarians would take side with fundamentalists as exactly they did with LTTE terrorists. How they react to the crisis created by Halal, an outcome of this fundamentalism gives ample evidences for what is in store.
I can't believe how sad these comments are. I can understand why they are all anonymous; what a shame to be associated with such hateful, ignorant statements.
FYI, it is not the NGO's or western civilisation that are raping our women, or masturbating on them on buses or chasing them on motorbikes are abusing them as adolescents.
It's Sri Lankan men.
Instead of realising that, you instead try to point out that "ooh, the girls are pretty, they are smiling, so they are not in touch with the down-trodden women..."

Yes, the picture does speak a thousand words. It shows that women in Colombo chose to stand up against abuse, rape and assault by Sri Lankan men. The fact that YOU are not in the picture speaks to me, telling me that you don't care for gender based violence. Instead, you would rather sit behind anonymous comments spinning conspiracy theories. Yes, 'vested interests' are trying to 'invade' Sri Lanka using GBV as an excuse... ooooooh!
Thank you all for showcasing your ignorance, I shall direct people to these comments when I want to show them that yes, Sri Lankan men and women are really this myopic when it comes to the state of their country. They really do think that halaal food is a more pressing concern than the hundreds and thousands of women that are raped, assaulted,abused (and then blamed for it!) in this country.
